CVV Meaning

The meaning of CVV is “Card Verification Value”. This is a three or four-digit number that is on every credit card. The CVV code is one of the many security features integrated into credit cards in order to reduce fraudulent transactions.

In most cases, the CVV or card verification code is not stored with the other identifying information in the magnetic strip or chip of the credit card. Therefore, it is only accessible if the credit card is physically present or the person who owns the card confirms it to complete a purchase.

Not surprisingly, most payment processors and online merchants force customers to insert the CVV number to complete a transaction. If a prospective customer attempts to complete a purchase without entering the card verification code, the security verification will generally fail during the checkout process.

Note: before purchasing with your credit card, it’s important to know the purchase APR the credit card issuer charges when a balance is being held on the card.

How Do I Find My CVV Code on My Credit Card?

There are two main places where you can find your CVV code on your credit card, which will vary depending on the type of credit card you have. For example, if you have a Visa or Mastercard, your CVV code will be a three-digit code on the back of the card in (or near) the signature panel. On the other hand, if you have an American Express card, the CVV code will be four digits and located on the face of the card center right.

That said, if you have a virtual credit card that is not available to you physically, you will still have a CVV code for the card. In most cases, the CVV code is located within the payment application on your mobile device. In certain instances, you may need to go into the card security settings within your application in order to confirm this information.

If you’re looking to use your credit card, you can use your credit card at an ATM without a CVV code. Instead, you will need to use your PIN.

Can I Share My CVV Number?

Is a CVV Safe When Making a Payment?
